Aboard the 2010 Express:
A National Summit on Children and Youth
with Special Health Care Needs and Their Families

Overview
The Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB), the American Academy of Pediatrics
(AAP), the Family Voices (FV) and the March of Dimes invite all persons and
organizations concerned with children and youth with special health care
needs to board the 2010 Express. The 2010 Express represents an innovative,
national campaign to achieve family-centered, culturally-competent, comprehensive,
and coordinated systems of services for all children and youth with special
health needs, in every community, by the year 2010. A focal point of this
initiative will be All
Aboard the 2010 Express: A National Summit on Children and Youth with Special
Health Care Needs and Their Families. The summit will take place at the
Hilton Washington in Washington, D.C. on December 12 -13, 2001.
During a highly interactive, two-day summit, plenary sessions,
workshops, exhibits and a cyber café will provide
participants with new information, models, tools and skill
building to effectively implement actions to achieve service
systems for CSHCN. Most important, the summit will provide
numerous structured and informal opportunities for participants
to build upon existing partnerships and develop new collaborative
relationships. Youth and family leaders will be available
throughout the conference to discuss issues and implementation
strategies with other participants. Only by working together at
the Federal, State and local levels, public and private
sectors - can we achieve the goals of the 10 Year Action
plan.
Achieving Success for All Children
and Youth with Special Health Care Needs is designed
to accompany Healthy
People 2010 (HP 2010). In Healthy People 2010, the
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, in partnership
with States, communities, and many organizations in the
public and private sectors, has set out a series of objectives
to bring better health to all people in this country. Achieving
Success is a 10-Year Action Plan for the nation that
addresses the objectives in Healthy People 2010 related
to the care of children and youth with special health
care needs.
Target Audience
The summit will bring together more than 1,500 participants, including: Youth
and family leaders Physicians, nurses and other health providers Federal
and State agencies Social service, mental health, educational and vocational
rehab agencies and providers Medicaid, insurers, foundations and other public
and private payers, and Other individuals and organizations committed to
services for CSHCN and their families.
Cost
All Professional/Agency Nnon-Federal) participants will be charged $200. Family/Youth
and Federal Agency Staff will be charged $100.
Course Objectives
The goals of the summit are to 1) publicly release the new 10-Year Action Plan
to Achieve Community-Based Service Systems for Children and Youth with Special
Health Care Needs and their Families, which has been jointly developed by
MCHB, AAP, FV, March of Dimes and other organizations, 2) build national
understanding and enthusiasm for the Action Plan and 3) mobilize committed
participants to promise to undertake specific activities to make the plan
a reality in their States and communities.
