Medical Home Training Program - November 9, 2000

Overview  
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) will offer its Every Child Deserves a Medical Home Educational Program in Salt Lake City, UT on November 9, 2000 at Primary Children's Medical Center. The program was held once already this Fall on October 7, 2000 at the Intermountain Shriners Hospital and was very positively received. The program aims to support pediatric health care providers, children with special health care needs and their families, and communities interested in the well being of these special needs children in a changing health care environment.

Target Audience
The target audience includes pediatric health professionals and their staff, families of children with special needs, managed care professionals, policy makers, community members, and and other professionals who care for children with special needs.

Cost
Physicians, nurses, and allied health care professionals will be charged $50. There is no fee for parents and residents (medical students). Scholarships of $50 will be available for up to 10 parents to help cover childcare and travel expenses.

Course Objectives
General pediatricians, family physicians, pediatric subspecialists, and other pediatric health care professionals, nurses, pediatric office staff, community resources, and parents of children with special needs are invited to participate in the course. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the elements of the medical home concept as applied to their practice environment or child's care;
  • Understand the concepts, skills, and information necessary to successfully care for children with special health care needs who are enrolled in managed care organizations;
  • Accurately describe trends and developments in caring for children with special health care needs;
  • Be able to identify programs in the community that serve children with special health care needs; and
  • Be able to assess, and if necessary improve pediatric office practices to assure that they are sensitive to families of children with special health care needs.

Strategies for coordinating care, working with community based resources, and collaborating with specialists and allied health care professionals will be discussed.
