Medical Home Resources on HealthyChildren.org
HealthyChildren.org, the official parenting Web site of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), hosts several useful tools and resources related to medical home. Two new resources that can be found on HealthyChildren.org include What is a Medical Home?, A Minute for Kids audio recording, and the Guidelines for Referral to Pediatric Surgical Specialists.

Consumer Platform for Health IT—Advancing Patient and Family Engagement through Technology
The Consumer Partnership for eHealth (CPeH), led by the National Partnership for Women & Families, is a non-partisan group of consumer, labor, and patient organizations representing more than 127 million people. CPeH recently released the Consumer Platform for Health IT—Advancing Patient and Family Engagement Through Technology PDF. This resource offers a detailed vision for a patient-centered health care system in which vastly improved access to timely, electronic information equips consumers to actively participate in health care as both partners and leaders.

PCMH Patient Recognition Public Comment
With funding from The Commonwealth Fund, National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) has launched efforts to incorporate patient and family feedback into requirements for practices seeking patient-centered medical home (PCMH) recognition. NCQA welcomes suggestions and encourages comments on the proposed new measure, CAHPS Patient-Centered Medical Home Survey (CAHPS PCMH Survey), as well as proposed requirements for collection and reporting of data, to be used in the PCMH Optional Recognition in Patient Experiences. New Resources Available—AAP Healthy Foster Care America Program
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Healthy Foster Care America program has released two new resources for physicians related to foster care. These resources—10 Things Every Pediatrician Should Know About Children in Foster Care PDF and A Message From a Child Formerly in Foster Care PDFassist in conveying key information about the health issues and needs of children and teens in foster care.

National Parent Helpline
The National Parent Helpline is a new telephone and Web-based resource for parents and caregivers dedicated to strengthening families by providing emotional support and helping parents identify solutions to parenting and family challenges. The helpline and its trained advocates are available to all parents and caregivers and provide them with assistance, referrals, and resources. In turn, those parents use their knowledge to build stronger, healthier communities. The helpline is operated by Parents Anonymous® Inc, a family strengthening organization focused on prevention by positively impacting the well-being of families and communities worldwide.

HRSA Public Health Internship Program
Application Deadline: Rolling
This Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Public Health Internship Program enables graduate and undergraduate students to experience Federal service through a one semester rotation at HRSA. Participants have frequent contact with HRSA public health experts in one of a wide-range of disciplines including, but not limited to, rural health policy, HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health, health care systems, and program analysis and evaluation.

National Health Service Corp Scholarship Program
Application Deadline: June 9

The National Health Service Corp (NHSC) Scholarships Program covers tuition, required fees, and other reasonable educational costs, plus a monthly support stipend, for students pursuing careers in primary care. Recipients commit to serving in the Corps for 2 to 4 years in an underserved community.

Applied Public Health Leadership Training Program
Application Deadline: June 9
The purpose of this pilot program, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is to improve community health through applied, team-based collaborative leadership development. This program will establish a national applied health leadership training program to provide customized applied public health leadership training to local and state public health officials, primary care and community health leaders, and their partners.

Innovative Evidence Based Models for Improving the System of Services for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs
Application Due:  June 13
The purpose of this grant is to replicate innovative evidence-based models that improve services for children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN). The Innovative Evidence Based Models for Improving the System of Services for CYSHCN will provide funding to innovative programs in one of the following four key areas:  outreach, care coordination, blended or braided funding, and access to medical home.

CVS Caremark Charitable Trust Accepting Grant Applications for Programs Serving Children With Disabilities
Deadline: June 15 and August 15
Grants of up to $50,000 will be awarded to organizations working to increase opportunities for success for children under the age of 21 with disabilities as well as to improve the overall quality of health and well-being in underserved communities. For additional information, click here.

Oral Health Training and Technical Assistance National Cooperative Agreement (NCA)
Application Deadline: June 30
The purpose of the Oral Health Training and Technical Assistance National Cooperative Agreement (NCA) is to provide specialized training and technical assistance to HRSA awardees including HRSA-supported service delivery and workforce programs, Primary Care Associations (PCAs), State Offices of Rural Health (SORHs), and Primary Care Offices (PCOs), around increasing access to primary oral health care services for underserved and vulnerable populations.

AAP Pediatric Coding Webinar—How to Code When the Kid Isn't There

As educated parents want more informed participation in all their children’s medical decision-making, there is a demand for convenient and timely access to non–face-to-face services including advice, consultation, and treatment by e-mail and telephone. This webinar highlights codes for non–face-to-face care. This webinar will provide guidelines for appealing for payment for non–face-to-face services and provide AAP resources to help you do so.

Webinar—Practical Approaches to Enhance Communication and Coordinated Care in the PCMH
June 8—1 to 2pm (Eastern)
This webinar, hosted by the Patient-Centered Primary Care Collaborative (PCPCC), will feature Dr Jennifer Lail from Chapel Hill Pediatrics and Adolescents, PA. Dr Lail will present some of the steps they took on their journey to becoming a patient-centered medical home (PCMH) with special emphasis on how this practice coordinates care for patients with special health care needs. Dr Lail will discuss the critical factors related to coordinating care and will identify several approaches the practice took to enhance communication and co-management to improve chronic condition management for patients in their practice.

The AAP will be introducing a NEW program for pediatric health care providers that will offer practice service solutions, including  methodologies and tools that will accelerate practice-based high-quality, cost-effective health care via the medical home model. As a part of these service offerings, the AAP will be hosting a series of practice service webinars for all child health professionals invested in providing family-centered primary care. The first of this webinar series will be Access and Continuity in the Medical Home Setting: Enhancing Continuity of Care in Your Practice Through 21st-Century Communication. This webinar will be led by Susan J. Kressly, MD, FAAP, and Kenneth M. McConnochie, MD, MPH, FAAP. Each will discuss a practical process for implementing patient access and continuity in a primary care practice setting. These leaders in pediatrics will refer to personal practice experience, processes, and quality improvement strategies that can be implemented to enhance access in a medical home and deliver quality care.

The objectives of this free continuing medical education (CME) webinar, hosted by the AAP and the NCMHI, include:

  • State the importance of patient-and family-centeredness in the delivery of preventive, acute, and chronic care for all children and youth
  • Describe the impact of provider/parent partnerships on positive child health outcomes, particularly for diverse patient populations
  • Explore strategies, tools, and resources available to assess practices cultural and linguistic competency and its impact on health disparities

AAP Future of Pediatrics Conference

HHS Awards $4.9 Million to Support Families of Children with Special Health Care Needs
HHS has announced $4.9 million in new and continuing grants to support the Family-to-Family Health Information Centers, primarily non-profit organizations run by and for families with children with special health care needs. Funding for the centers was extended through 2012 by the Affordable Care Act. For additional information, click here.

AHRQ and the Ad Council Launch Conoce las Preguntas Campaign
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Ad Council has released Conoce las Preguntas (Know the Questions). This multimedia Spanish-language campaign has been launched to encourage Hispanics to get more involved in their health care and to talk with their doctors about their medical concerns. The national public service advertising campaign, which features television, radio, print, and Web ads, offers tips to help Hispanics prepare for medical appointments by thinking ahead of time about questions to ask their doctors during medical appointments.

Practice Supports: Using Care Managers, Quality Improvement Coaches to Transform Medicaid Primary Care
This new technical assistance brief from the Center for Health Care Strategies describes how states are using two types of practice-based supports—care managers and quality improvement coaches—to help Medicaid primary care practices provide higher-quality, more patient-centered, and cost-effective care. The brief draws from the experiences of pilot programs underway in six states to describe models for deploying practice supports to primary care practices, different approaches for hiring and paying for these individuals, how Medicaid programs are using practice supports within a managed care delivery system, and early lessons that Medicaid is learning about these practice supports.

National Survey on the Family Experience in Primary Care
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has released a survey on family experiences with primary care physicians in treating children and adolescents living with serious mental illness. The survey asked parents and caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental illness a variety of questions related to their experiences discussing and addressing mental health concerns with their child's primary care physician and staff. The survey report, The Family Experience with Primary Care Physicians and Staff PDF, provides a comprehensive overview of their responses, thoughts, and comments. NAMI has also developed a companion brochure, titled What Families Want from Primary Care PDF, for primary care providers that includes valuable tips on how to create a primary care setting that is more welcoming to conversations about mental health, encourage open communication about mental health and take action to support families who have a child living with a mental illness.

Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs Family Scholars Program—Call for Applications
Application Deadline: June 10 at 5pm (Eastern)
The Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs (AMCHP), with support from the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, has announced the availability of scholarships for family leaders to participate in the AMCHP 2011-2012 Family Scholars Program (FSP). The FSP represents an opportunity to identify, encourage and train family leaders to promote policies, programs, and systems at the national, state and or local-level that address the health and well-being of women, children, and families, including children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN). Family Scholars will increase their knowledge and skills associated with these competencies over a 12 month period through distance-based learning opportunities and by attending the AMCHP Annual Conference in February 2012.

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality 2010 State Snapshots
Based on data collected for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) National Healthcare Quality Report (NHQR), the State Snapshots provide health care quality information in order to help state officials and their public- and private-sector partners better understand health care quality and disparities in their state. The State Selection Map provides information on the quality of each state's health care and comparison information with national rates or best performing states by overall health care quality, types of care (preventive, acute, and chronic), five clinical conditions including maternal and child health, and special focus areas such as asthma, Healthy People 2010, clinical preventive services, and disparities.

Spotlight on the National Center for Cultural Competence
The mission of the National Center for Cultural Competence (NCCC) is to increase the capacity of health care and mental health care programs design, implement, and evaluate culturally and linguistically competent service delivery systems to address growing diversity, persistent disparities, and promote health and mental health equity.  The NCCC provides national leadership on translating evidence into policy and practice for programs and personnel concerned with health and mental health care delivery, administration, education and advocacy.  The NCCC works with local, state, federal, and international governmental agencies, family advocacy and support organizations, local hospitals and health centers, healthcare systems, health plans, mental health systems, universities, quality improvement organizations, national professional associations, and foundations. 

As a component of the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development (GUCCHD), the NCCC has provided training, technical assistance, and consultation over the past 15 years to promote and sustain cultural and linguistic competency, which is a core element of the medical home model of care; its on-line training, publications, and products are accessed by tens of thousands of individuals each year.
